Deep in the dusty, smog drenched hills of Los Angeles, there is a man decked in a powder-blue tuxedo, fez perched on his head, flailing in a bottomless pit of decapitated, bleating Furbys, rivers of hot solder, and chattering, malfunctioning Speak N’ Spells.  This man is Derek Sajbel and he’s not drowning in this detritus, he’s frantically wrenching some of the freshest, most hysterical music yet committed to wax out of it.

Active in the experimental music scene for over 10 years, Derek’s first works in 1994 were noisy, distorted nonsense and parody rock birthed from his collaborations with any like-minded nutcases around him.  Over the years, he dabbled in improvisational electro, Japanese free-noise (in Japan ), and clattering jazz tunes before discovering the world of circuit bending.  Madly tearing through bins of toys, a soldering iron his weapon of choice, he began to birth the sound of ‘Dr. Rek’.  Releasing two collections of his work in the “DnA Bent” series with partner Andy Ben, people began to take notice

The vinyl release of “The Business of Absurdity” marks a first glance into the new sound that the Doctor has been gestating in the last year.  A joyous exercise in bombastic breakbeats gleefully charging through a field of analog blips, squiggles, and bleeps, all simmering in lush string sections, jagged melodies, and absurd samples.

A vital presence in the Los Angeles experimental scene, Derek can be seen regularly performing at the legendary Infinite Complexity blowout parties, the über-hip Downtown LA Hive Gallery, and in a bevy of other venues either solo or with one of his innumerable collaborations.

Across the 8 tracks on the vinyl are 4 original cuts from Dr. Rek himself, a sci-fi breakcore track from his jazz-infected cult group Zef Renirhs, a reinterpretation of ‘DNA Bent’ material by related group EMIS, and perhaps most notably, two stellar remixes by the illustrious Terminal11 (Phthalo / Tigerbeat6 / Mirex / Cock Rock Disco), and the internationally acclaimed Daedelus (Ninja Tune / Mush / Plug Research / Laboratory Instincts / Eastern Developments).

I started Igloo Martian back in 2005 as a showcase for some of the circuit bent toys and keyboards that I had came to make. I found out about the free music player from being part of the yahoo benders groups and other "ebay minded" benders. I heard many crazy sounds from many crazy benders and jumped at the oppurtunity to host my own bent channel. From making myspace friends and contacts, I teamed up with a circuit bender from california-Igor Amokian- for a split cd release. "mad skills Igor mad skills". Igor Amokians self released 7" RECORD! This is the best 7" in existance. Hands down some of the best bent tracks this planet has ever heard. That's no over-statement either. Worth a couple listens. Very rare must have record. Igor is one of the founding fathers of the experimental circuit bending movement. This is sure to be a Classic. I own 5 copies myself in my private collection. HE HE HE...MINE!!
